Based on different base material, there're three basic types but not limited to: FR-4/3/2 PCB, CEM-3 PCB, Metal Core PCB and Special PCB series (such as Ceramic PCB).
For FR-4 PCB, right now, we just class it into S/S PCB, 2 Layers PCB, Multi-Layers PCB (20 layers).
For MCPCB, which full name is Metal Core Printed Circuit Board, there're single layer MCPCB, double layers MCPCB and double sided MCPCB (2 layers on each side).
Special PCB, in fact, should be sorted to above two tapes, but considering special requirements, so we list it seperated. Right now, we can make RF boards (Rogers, Taconic materials), Heavy Copper PCB (4~20 OZ/ft2), Ceramic PCB, HDI, and so on.

Aluminum PCB/Metal Core PCB/MCPCB/Insulated Metal Substrate(IMS)Â
Insulated metal substrate (IMS consists of a metal baseplate (Aluminum is commonly used because of its low cost and density) covered by a thin layer of dielectric (usually an epoxy-based layer) and a layer of copper(35um to more than 200um thick). The FR-4 based dielectric is usually think (about 100um). Compared to a classical printed circuit board, the IMS/MCPCB provides a better heat dissipation. It is one of the simplest way to provide efficient cooling to surface mount components.Â
Among all Metal core PCBs, Aluminum MCPCBs are the most common type-the base material consists of aluminum core with standard FR4. It features a thermal metal-clad layer that dissipates heat in a highly efficient manner, while cooling components and increasing the overall performance of the products. Currently, Aluminum-backed PCBs are regarded as the solution to high power and tight tolerance applications.

Metal Core PCB Materials and ThicknessÂ
The metal core of the thermal PCB can be :
1) Aluminum (aluminum core PCB),Â
2) Copper (copper core PCB or a heavy copper PCB)Â
or a mixture of special alloys, while the most common being Aluminum core PCB.
The thickness of metal cores in PCB base plates is typically 30 mil - 125 mil, but thicker and thinner plates are also available.
MCPCB copper foil thickness can be 1 - 10 oz.Â
