Betel nut is the seed of the fruit of the areca palm. It is also known as areca nut. It is mainly used for chewing with betel leaf in almost all South Asian Countries and in many South East Asian and Oceanic countries.
Betel Nut is available in dried, cured, and fresh forms. When the husk of the fresh fruit is green, the nut inside is soft enough to be cut with a typical knife. In the ripe fruit, the husk becomes yellow or orange, and as it dries, the fruit inside hardens to a wood-like consistency. At that stage, the areca nut can only be sliced using a special scissors-like cutter. The major alkaloid in betel nut is Arecoline. Besides, there are other compounds such as Arecaidine, Guvacine, Isoguvacine, guvacoline, Arecolidine and Homoarecoline.
Clove of commerce is the dried, fully grown but still unopened flower buds of the evergreen tree. Clove is largely used as dried whole buds. Ground clove is used for curry mixtures and clove oil is used for flavoring foods and in pharmaceutical perfumery industry. Cloves are used either whole or ground to provide flavor for both sweet and savory foods in pickling and the production of sauces and ketchups. As a medicine it is valued as a carminative, aromatic and stimulant.

The Ceylon Cinnamon or true Cinnamon, which is indigenous to Sri Lanka, is the dried bark of cinnamomum zealanicum, which belongs to the family Lauraceae. Cinnamon bark is largely available in the form of quills and making quills is unique to Sri Lanka. Quills are made by rolling the pealed bark and join several of them together to get a pipe like structure in the required length. Other than that pieces of bark are available as chips, quilling or featherings. Cinnamon is unique plant which has essential oil in leaves, bark and roots but chemical composition of them are completely different from each other. Cinnamon grown and produced in Sri Lanka has acquired long standing reputation in the international market due to its quality, color, flavor and aroma.
