Massoia Bark (Cryptocaria massoia) oil is being used in seasoning, traditional medicine and fragrance ingredient. C-10 Massoia lactone is a major constituent of its essential oil which has been proven as the antibacterial principle and has the ability to increase the phagocytic index of mice macrophage. In food industry, massoia bark CO2-extract is used to flavor food and beverages. Its sweet fragrance is reminiscent of coconut flavor. It is used for flavoring e.g. butter, milk and diary products, bakeries, confectionery, candies, ice cream, popcorn, cereals and dietary products. Massoia lactone has a pleasant odor which is described as sweet, coconutty, lactonic, creamy and milky.
