Calcite is the most widely available mineral found within our planetÃ¢??s crust. It is the main component found in limestone and marble. It is also used as a building material, as an abrasive, as a construction aggregate and as a pigment. It is also used in agricultural soil treatment.

The physical properties of calcite are softness with a value of 3 on the Mohs scale, high lustre, lower specific gravity and rhombohedral cleavage. Calcite differs from dolomite as its fragments effervesce readily in cold hydrochloric acid, whereas dolomite fragments do not.
