Principle Application 4 Waveplate
UPT quarter waveplates create a quarter-wavelength phase shift 2, 90 and can convert linear polarization to circular polarization and vice versa. They are often used with a linear polarizer to form an isolator, blocking light reflected back from other surfaces (ellipsometry, optical pumping, isolation).

UPT half waveplates retard one polarization direction by half a wavelength 180, effectively changing the direction of linear polarization, depending on the orientation of incident linear polarization with respect to the crystal axis. Therefor they can be used as continuously adjustable polarization rotators e.g. in electro optical modulation or as a variable beam splitter when used in combination with a polarizing beam splitter.

Zero Order Waveplate

The zero order waveplate is designed to give a retardance of zero full waves, plus the desired fraction. Zero order waveplate shows better performance than low/multiple order waveplates. It has broad bandwidth and a lower sensitivity to temperature and wavelength changes. It should be considered for more critical applications.


It is constructed of two low order waveplates with their axes crossed. Thus,the effect of the first plate is canceled by the second,except for the residual difference between them. There are normally three different structures as follows,

Low Order Waveplate

Low(multiple) order waveplate is designed to give a retardance of several full waves, plus the desired fraction. This result in a single, physically robust component with desired performance. However, even small changed in wavelength or temperature will result in significant changes in the desired fractional retardance. They are less expensive and find use in many applicatios where the increased sensitivities are not an important.

Achromatic Waveplate

Achromatic waveplate is made from two different substrate materials such as crystal quartz and magnesium fluoride. For the single material,waveplateâ??s working wavelength is very limited because of the dispersion of the material. Zero order waveplates

A quarter-or half-wave retarder made from two plates of quartz with their fast axes crossed; the difference in thickness between the two plates determines the retardance. Zero-order retarders provide accurate retardance over a broad range of wavelengths and dance over a broad range of wavelengths and are more durable than single-element retarders.

Cemented zero-order waveplates

Cemented zero-order waveplate is constructed of two multi-order waveplates with their axis crossed. Thus, it performs as a zero-order waveplate because of the effect of two plates counteracting each other. It has wide temperature bandwidth and wavelength bandwidth properties. Because it is cemented, the dama zge threshold must be considered (about 10mw/cm2) when used.

Waveplates

Waveplates, also known as retardation plates, are optical element having two principal axes slow and fast, that resolve an incident polarized beam into two mutually perpendicular polarized beams. The emerging beam recombines to form a particular single polarized beam. Retardations plates produce full, half, quarter and octadic-wave retardations.

Low order waveplates

The properties of low order waveplates are much better than the multi-order wave-plates because of its thinner thickness (less than 0.5mm). Better temperature (38), wavelength (1.5nm) and incident angle (4.5�) bandwidth and high damage threshold make it widely used in common application. Also it is economical.
