Applications of Samarium Cobalt
Computer disc drives, sensors, traveling wave tubes, linear actuators,
satellite systems, motors where temporary stability is vital.
Magnetizing and Handling
Samarium Cobalt magnets are very brittle and very strong magnetically. Therefore,
it is crucial to handle these magnets with extreme care to avoid personal
injury and damage to the magnets. Fingers can be severely pinched between
attracting magnets. Magnets can chip if allowed to “jump at” an
attracting object. It is highly recommended that when constructing rare
earth magnetic assemblies, they be magnetized after assembly.
Samarium Cobalt Machining
Since Samarium Cobalt magnet material is prone to chipping and cracking,
it does not lend itself to conventional machining methods. It can, however,
be abrasively ground, but only with the use of liberal amounts of coolant.
The coolant minimizes heat fracturing and the risk of fires caused by
oxidized grinding dust.

Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) rare earth permanent magnets
SmCo magnets are manufactured with sintering or compression bonding. They are anisotropic and can only be magnetized in the direction of orientation. In general, magnetizing fields of approximately 30KOe to 45KOe are required to saturate SmCo magnets. There are two types for alloy materials, 1:5 and 2:17.

Characteristics:
1.High magnetic properties The intrinsic coercive force could reach up to 22KOe.

2.Low temperature coefficient For some materials, ¦Á could reach low to -0.01% of Br/¡ãC.

3.High working temperature SmCo The maximum recommended working temperature is 250¡ãC(480¡ãF) for SmCo 1:5 and 350¡ãC(660¡ãF) for SmCo 2:17. The Curie Temperature could reach high to 750¡ãC(1390¡ãF) for SmCo 1:5 and 850¡ãC(1560¡ãF) for SmCo 2:17.

Cobalt oxide (Co203) is an expensive cobalt oxide with a theoretical cobalt content of 71.06%, an oxygen content of 28.94%, and a density of 6.079/cm3. It is a black amorphous powder that generates cobalt oxide (Co304) after heating. Cobalt oxide is an unstable compound and cannot be freed. The cobalt oxide commonly referred to actually still contains a certain amount of cobalt tetraoxide. Co203 is only stable in a hydrated state. This hydrate will dehydrate and transform into the intermediate oxide cobalt tetraoxide (Co304) at 265�°C. Cobalt oxide is reduced to cobalt tetraoxide (Co304) by H2 at 125�°C, reduced to CoO at 200�°C, and reduced to cobalt metal at 250�°C. Cobalt oxide is insoluble in water. After dissolving in water, it decomposes into hydrates when it encounters water. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in acid and forms corresponding salts.
