Okra leaves are heart-shaped and three- to five-lobed. The flowers are yellow with a crimson centre. The fruit, or pod, hairy at the base, is a tapering 10-angled capsule 10 25 cm (4 10 inches) in length (except in the dwarf varieties) that contains numerous oval dark-coloured seeds.
Okra is also known as lady's fingers, gumbo, or bhindi is the most important vegetable crop of the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its mild taste and unique texture, with a peach-like fuzz on the outside. Inside the pod are small, edible seeds. Okra is also a source of antioxidants. Its pods and seeds contain a variety of antioxidant compounds, including phenolic compounds and flavonoid derivatives, such as catechins and quercetin. Scientists think that these compounds may help lower the risk of cancer. It grows best in hot, humid climates, with Egypt being the leading frozen vegetables okra producer.
