Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid, commonly abbreviated as EDTA, is a versatile synthetic compound with the chemical formula C10H16N2O8. It is widely recognized for its chelating properties, which enable it to bind and sequester metal ions, making it an essential component in industries such as medicine, agriculture, and chemical analysis. EDTA is commonly used in medicine as a chelating agent for treating heavy metal poisoning and as a preservative in some medications. In agriculture, it is employed to enhance nutrient absorption by plants in soil. Additionally, EDTA is crucial in analytical chemistry, serving as a reagent to titrate metal ions and as a stabilizer in cosmetic and food products. Its ability to form stable complexes with metal ions and its diverse applications make EDTA a valuable chemical compound in various fields.
EDTA is used extensively in the analysis of blood. It is an anticoagulant for blood samples for CBC/FBCs, where the EDTA chelates the calcium present in the blood specimen, arresting the coagulation process and preserving blood cell morphology.
Tetrasodium EDTA is the salt resulting from the neutralization of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid with four equivalents of sodium hydroxide (or an equivalent sodium base). It is used as a source of the chelating agent EDTA
EDTA Pure Acid (Ethylenediamine Tetra Acetic Acid) is a synthetic amino acid formulation, for use in tertiary flooding method of enhanced oil recovery, owing to its high pH chelating ability at low concentrations, when prepared in sea water. It
reacts with metallic cations, forming a stable rigid compound and making it easily
excretable from the application system, especially from the cores of sandstones
and carbonates. It is preferred over other chelating agents owing to its ability to form strong covalent bond with metallic ions as other inorganic contaminants may react with those metal ions, forming their own compounds.
Tetrasodium EDTA is an amino acidic chelating agent minimizing metal ion contamination and facilitating enzymatic reactions that could be inhibited by heavy metal traces. EDTA Tetrasodium salt also works as a slime dispersant and is even effective in reducing scale deposits and water hardness.
