Moggina Jade in Kannada would mean a long plait or braid decorated with flower buds, which is usually Jasmine. Moggu Jade is a traditional way of decorating hair for new brides during their wedding. This flower bud braid is also worn by girls during Bharatanatyam and many other traditional dance forms. A south Indian tradition of decorating the hair of a small girl for a function, a Bharatanatyam dance performer or a bride trails its origin to Karnataka. Nonetheless is famous in other southern regions as well. This classic floral plait is artistically prepared by sewing either Jasmine, rose or kanagambharam buds on a thin and long strip of cardboard and then tied on to the plait of the woman. Thus it is some sort of a craft where flowers are organized in an exotic and delicate fashion. During weddings especially in Karnataka the Mysore Mallige buds are used for preparing the Moggina jade or the jasmine (only) bud pleat.
