If the surge arrestor is out of service, it causes short circuit in the system. When surge arrestor separator is not used, this short circuit cause the activation of the circuit breaker and blackout of the energy of the system. Surge Arrestor separator prevents energy blackout by cutting grounding connection of the surge arrestor that is
out of service.
Activation of the surge arrestor separator, in other words cutting the
grounding connection means that the Surge Arrestor has lost its
function and must be replaced.
Structure and Mode of Operation;
When the surge arrestor loses its function, separator responds quickly
to the current flow on it.
Voltage decreases on the resistances of the separator and the capsule explodes
by means of the arc occurring
in the small opening inside of it and separates grounding
connection of the surge arrestor.

Structure and Mode of Operation;
Metal oxide surge arrestors do not contain gaps but contain metal oxide blocks that are placed into a polymer body impermeably. These blocks carry variable resistance feature. In other words, they become conductive as the voltage rises. In case of temporary over voltage, current flows over surge arrestor so that such devices or cables are protected.
