The genus of Scutellaria includes approximately 300 species. Scutellaria baicalensis georgi from the Lamiaceae family is said to be one of the potent medicinal herbs and is thus used to treat a number of health disorders for over two thousand years.
It is a perennial herb, which grows to a height of 1-4 feet. It has four-angled stems with multiple opposite leaves. Its blue to purple flowers are characterised by the specific shape, which resembles the scull. Two petals of the flower are often called lips. The flowers, blooming in July, are situated on one side of the stem. The root of the herb is thick and branchy. It is almost skinless.

Baicalin is an active component of Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract. It can cross the blood-brain barrier and distribute in cerebral nuclei. However, its mechanism and the effects on the nuclei where it accumulates remain unclear. We used an HPLC-electrochemical detection method to determine the dopamine in cerebral nuclei after intravenous administration of flavonoids from Scutellaria Baicalensis and analyzed the relativity between baicalin and DA in cerebral nuclei. We found that the dopamine system is another target system of brain function which baicalin acts on.

Baicalein Attenuates Kidney Injury Induced by MI and Reperfusion on DWN RENAL
Acute kidney injury is a common and severe complication of acute myocardial infarction and cardiac surgery. It results in increased mortality, morbidity, and duration of hospitalization. Baicalin is a component of the root of Scutellaria baicalensis, which has traditionally been used to treat cardiovascular and liver diseases in Asia. In this study, we investigated whether baicalein can attenuate kidney injury induced by myocardial ischemia and reperfusion in rats.

Myocardial ischemia and reperfusion, induced by a 40-minute occlusion and a 3-hour reperfusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery, significantly increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels in addition to causing histological changes in the kidneys. Kidney apoptosis was also significantly increased. Furthermore, myocardial ischemia and reperfusion significantly increased the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-�±, interleukin-1, and interleukin-6 as well as the tumor necrosis factor-�± levels in the kidneys.

Intravenous pretreatment with baicalein (in doses of 3, 10, or 30â??mg/kg), however, significantly reduced the increasesin the creatinine level, renal histological damage, and apoptosis induced by myocardial ischemia and reperfusion. In addition, the increases in the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-�±, interleukin-1, and interleukin-6, and of tumor necrosis factor-�± in the kidneys were significantly reduced. Western blot analysis revealed that baicalein significantly increased Bcl-2 andreduced Bax in the kidneys.

Introduction:
Scutellaria baicalensis was among seven ingredients in a combination oral herbal product known as PC-SPES that was used to treat prostate cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated a nationwide recall of all PC-SPES in 2002 because the capsules were found to contain varying amounts of prescription drugs.
Other combination formulas containing Scutellaria baicalensis are used in Asian medicine to improve impaired brain function and to treat headaches.
Actions of Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract
Chinese scullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) is different from a related plant called American scullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia). Used more extensively in Asia than in the Americas or Europe, scullcap contains active flavonoids, chemicals that have a wide range of effects in the body. Two of its flavonoids, baicalin and wogonin, are known to be anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is the body response to irritation, injury, or infection. It usually includes pain, redness, and swelling in the area of the damage and it can occur within body tissues as well as on the surface of the skin. Both oral and topical forms of scullcap are being tested to treat inflammatory conditions that range from dermatitis to inflammatory bowel disease.

Medical Function:
1. Effects on digestive system: alcohol extract of huang qin or its ingredient baicalin can promote secretion of bile but another ingredient wogonin does not have this effect. Baicalein can promote movements of extra body intestines of rabbits but wogonin does not have this effect. Huang qin possesses a mild diarrhea effect.
