Tempered/toughened glass is made from annealed glass via a thermal tempering process in which the glass is heated till its softening point about 650 degrees and then quenching quickly to become Tempered glass or heat strengthened glass

Characteristics

A fully Tempered glass is 3 to 5 times stronger than annealed glass of similar thickness. A fully Tempered glass is regarded as a safety glass and when it breaks it disintegrates into small blunt pieces/ small oval-shaped pebbles which greatly reduce the chances of injuries

1) Strength - Fully low-e Tempered glass is generally 3 to 5 times stronger than annealed glass and twice as strong as heat strengthened glass of similar thickness, size and type. For fully Tempered glass the minimum surface compression is 10000 psi and for a heat strengthened glass is 4000-7000 psi for 6 mm glass.

2) Safety - When broken by impact, fully Tempered glass immediately disintegrates into small oval-shaped pebbles, thus greatly reducing the likelihood of cutting person

Toughened glass is manufactured through heating common glass uniformly to the softening point and then quenching it, causing a strong permanent internal stress in the glass, of which the internal tensile stress and external compressive stress should be in a stable tress equilibrium in order to intensify the operational strength and load carrying capacity of the glass and enhance its wind pressure resistance, weatherability and shock resistance.
With high strength and thermal stability, tempered glass can be widely applied to the places with special requirements on mechanical strength and security, such as glass curtain walls, balcony doors and windows, high-grade shopwindows, shower rooms, household supplies, balustrade glass of escalators, glass partitions, the places where there are a dense crowd or humans are apt to contact with glass and vulnerable to physical injury (such as stadiums) or the places where are vulnerable to body shocks, such as doors and windows, curtain walls, automobiles, trains and ships and the places where are susceptible to the changes in temperature.
