Benzoin is a balsamic resin obtained from the bark of several species of trees in the genus styrax.
Benzoin resin is commonly used in incense making and perfumes due to its sweet vanilla like aroma and fixative properties. It’s also burnt as incense on charcoal in India and Arabic countries.

Gum benzoin (raw material) from styrax trees (we call it name "white sticklac"). The styrax trees is from vietnam that grow to 20 feet. Deep incisions are made in the trunk of the tree from which the grayish color sap exudes. When the resinous lump becomes hard and brittle, it is collected from the bark. The size of the lumps are various from 1 to 3cm width and 2 to 7cm length. It has milky white color when it just exudates from the tree and become yellowish brown after 3 weeks as picture attached file
Benzoin resinoid makes a useful addition to blends for all types of circulatory and joint problems including poor circulation, arthritis, and rheumatism where it imparts a warming and comforting effect. For the best results with these conditions blend it with essential oils such as black pepper, ginger, juniper berry, lavender, rosemary or sweet marjoram.

The styrax benzoin tree is evergreen, and grows naturally in northern sumatra, indonesia.
The tree yields an almond shaped solid gum resin called benzoin gum sumatra (cas number: 9000-05-9), collected from incisions made into the trunk of the tree.
The gum resin is of high quality and has many commercial uses.
Gum benzoin sumatra is used as raw material in a variety of industries.
In perfumery in particular, benzoin is widely used as a fixative, with its warm scent able to blend with other fragrances, and its ability to slow the dispersion of essential oils and other fragrance materials into the air.
