Soil Tension sensor is a solid state electrical resistance sensing device that is used to measure soil water tension. As the tension changes with water content the resistance changes as well. That resistance can be measured using the soil Sensor. The sensor consists of a pair of highly corrosion resistant electrodes that are embedded within a granular matrix. A current is applied to the Sensor to obtain a resistance value. This sensor is designed to be a permanent sensor, placed in the soil to be monitored and â??read as often as necessary with a portable or stationary device. Internally installed gypsum provides some buffering for the effect of salinity levels normally found in irrigated agricultural crops and landscapes.

About MT-10
We designed the MT-10 to measure the water content, electrical conductivity, and temperature of soil. The MT-10 uses an oscillator running at 70 MHz to measure the dielectric permittivity of soil to determine the water content. A thermistor in thermal contact with the sensor prongs provides the soil temperature. The Polyurethane coating on the MT-10 circuit board protects the components from water damage and gives the sensor a longer life span.

1.1 Quick test method
Select a suitable measurement location, avoid stones, and ensure that the steel needle does not touch hard objects. Discard the topsoil according to the required measurement depth, and maintain the original tightness of the soil below. Hold the sensor vertically and insert it into the soil. It is not allowed to shake left and right, it is recommended to measure multiple times to find the average value within a small range of one measurement point.
1.2 Buried survey
Vertically dig a pit with a diameter of> 20cm, insert the sensor steel needle horizontally into the pit wall at a predetermined depth, bury the pit tightly, and stabilize it for a period of time, then you can perform continuous measurement for several days, months, or even longer.
1.3 Precautions
1). All steel needles must be inserted into the soil during measurement.
2). Avoid direct sunlight on the sensor, which will cause excessive temperature. Pay attention to lightning protection in the field.
3). Do not bend the steel needle violently, do not pull the sensor lead wire with force, and do not beat or violently hit the sensor.
4). The protection grade of the sensor is IP68, which can soak the sensor in water.
5). Due to the presence of radio frequency electromagnetic radiation in the air, it should not be energized in the air for a long time.

This sensor is used to detect the presence of surface moisture on foliage and calculate the duration of wetness. When moisture is present, the sensor detects an electrical resistance change between the gold-plated elements of the grid. This is displayed by the logger as a value between 0 (dry) and 15 (wet).
