Rare Earth Smco Magnets

Supplier From China
Jul-30-24

Rare earth samarium cobalt magnets, shorted as SmCo rectangular magnet, are a type of powerful permanent magnet made from the basic elements samarium and cobalt and other metal rare earth materials by mixing, melting, grinding, pressing and sintering. They come in various sizes and shapes, like disc,bar, ring, arc,block, etc.,. Similar to neodymium strong magnets, they belong to the rare earth magnet category, and tcan be classified as SmCo5 and Sm2Co17 according the composition ratios of samarium and cobalt.

In comparison to neodymium rare earth magnets, although samarium cobalt magnets may not have as strong magnetic force, they possess two distinct advantages. Firstly, they operate effectively within a higher temperature range, and secondly, they exhibit greater resistance to corrosion.

Due to these characteristics, large smco block magnets are commonly employed in applications that demand high operating temperatures, such as generators, pump couplings, sensors, electric motors, marine applications, as well as in the automotive, racing, aerospace, military, and food and manufacturing industries. SmCo rare earth magnets not only perform well at high temperatures but also maintain their magnetic properties even in temperatures below absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius), making them popular for use in low-temperature applications.

Since the first oil crisis in 1973 and the radiation leak at Fukushima in 2011, more and more eyes on wind power. For example, affected by the nuclear leakage accident in Japan, Germany will plan to abandon nuclear power to generate electricity completely. And the same time, strive to develop new & Renewable Energy, such as wind power and solar energy. Refer to wind power, magnet which plays important role in wind turbine generator to generate power cannot be ignored.
At present, the magnet which used on wind turbine alternator is Sintered NdFeB magnet (Commonly known as magnet king, permanent magnet, rare earth magnet);
The common grades are N42, N48, N50, and N38SH and so on;
The common shapes are segment, block, wedge, and trapezoid;
The coating is Ni-Cu-Ni triple plated
The biggest block magnet for wind turbine generator is about 240x80x40 mm (the thickness cannot over 50mm)
The normal block size is 2 (2 inches x 1 inch x 1 inch)

China also develops wind energy rapidly these years. In 2011, there is half Wind Power Equipments for the whole world made in China. In this field, China is ahead of Germany and USA, and dominates the industry. This mainly depends on domestic magnet manufacture. Recently, considering high cost in purchasing wind turbine from China, many customers plan to purchase accessories and material and make wind turbine by themselves. Of course, this includes magnet purchase from China.
China magnet source care customers benefit and will provide Wind Turbine Permanent Magnet with good quality, reasonable price; to satisfy customers requirement in making family-type or industrial wind turbine.

With the high speed of replacement of electronic products and the dwindling of non-renewable resources, more and more people begin to pay attention to the electronics recycling industry. Walking in a residential area, you will find people sitting on the road side with the billboard of home electric appliance recycling. Japanese is using the recycled aluminum, iron and other resources to build their own "urban mines". Compared with the country which only uses their nature resources, japanese is wiser.
The magnetic separator is equipment used on recycling industry to distinguish the ferrous and non-ferrous, copper, aluminum and plastic. Their work mainly depends on the function of magnetic force and alternating magnetic field.

There are hard magnet and soft magnet. The magnet used on separator is hard magnet. Hard magnet is classified into five categories: sintered ndfeb, bonded ndfeb, ferrite, samarium cobalt, alnico. Only strong magnetic force can separate metal and non-metal apart. According to this, separator magnet is generally sintered ndfeb. At the same time, to consider magnet cost, big block ferrite is also an option. Samarium cobalt, alnico, and bonded ndfeb are not strong enough on magnetic force and high cost, so don t in considering the scope.

The shape of separator magnet is block. Like ferrite, the size is 6 . The size of sintered ndfeb depends on the design of magnetic equipment manufacturer. Every company will choose size and grade of permanent magnet according to their application.

Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) rare earth permanent magnets
SmCo magnets are manufactured with sintering or compression bonding. They are anisotropic and can only be magnetized in the direction of orientation. In general, magnetizing fields of approximately 30KOe to 45KOe are required to saturate SmCo magnets. There are two types for alloy materials, 1:5 and 2:17.

Characteristics:
1.High magnetic properties The intrinsic coercive force could reach up to 22KOe.

2.Low temperature coefficient For some materials, ¦Á could reach low to -0.01% of Br/¡ãC.

3.High working temperature SmCo The maximum recommended working temperature is 250¡ãC(480¡ãF) for SmCo 1:5 and 350¡ãC(660¡ãF) for SmCo 2:17. The Curie Temperature could reach high to 750¡ãC(1390¡ãF) for SmCo 1:5 and 850¡ãC(1560¡ãF) for SmCo 2:17.

4.High resistance to corrosion No coating is needed for surface protection. .

Common applications
High performance motors, Magnetic couplings, Magnetic separators, Aerospace defense, Magnistors, Instruments and meters

Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) rare earth permanent magnets
Known as the Third Generation of Rare Earth magnets, Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets are the most powerful and advanced commercial permanent today. Since made from Neodymium, one of the most plentiful rare earth elements, and inexpensive iron, NdFeB magnets offer the best value in cost and performance. NdFeB magnets are available in both sintered and bonded forms. Sintered NdFeB offers the highest magnetic properties (33MGOs to 51MGOe) while boned NdFeB offers lower energy. Although boned magnets do not possess magnetic properties as advanced as those of sintered magnets, they can be made in shapes and sizes that are difficult for sintering to achieve.

Characteristics:
1. Moderate temperature stability The working stability is under 80¡ãC (180¡ãF) for low Hcj NdFeB magnets and above 200¡ãC (400¡ãF) for high Hcj NdFeB magnets.

2. Excellent energy The highest energy product could reach up to 51MGOe.

3. Extremely resistance to demagnetization with Hci The intrinsic coercive force is over 30KOe.

4. Surface treatment needed Because NdFeB is easy to oxidize and corrode, coating or plating must be applied to the surface to protect magnets from oxidization and corrosion.

Common applications
DC and servo motors, Linear actuators, Magnetic separators, Speakers, Microphone assemblies, Sensors, VCM (voice coil motor), MRI
