Dioctyl ether is a colourless, oily liquid with an unpleasant odour. This liquid has been shown to be a good catalyst for hydrogenations reactions. Dioctyl ether reacts with fatty acids to form esters and with metal hydroxides to form alcohols. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of an acid or base through transfer reactions. It can also react with hydroxyl groups on solid surfaces to produce particles or coatings.
Application:
Dioctyl ether is used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations, such as suppositories, to dissolve certain substances that are not soluble in water and also as industrial applications.
