A higher standard
Washington apple growers adhere to a higher standard. Read on to learn how the quality of Washington Apples exceeds even the strict standards of the United States.

Appearance
An important difference between Washington and United States grades in red varieties is the definition and interpretation of â??good red toneâ??. Washington grades require a more uniform, intense and deep red hue than those of the United States.
In the green and yellow varieties, Washington grades are stricter than those in the United States regarding the amount of surface blemishes such as branch chafing, various types of discoloration, and hail damage. (Brown spots are discolorations of the apple peel that are usually caused by weather conditions.)
Internal quality
In addition to the most demanding external qualities, Washington Red and Golden Delicious apples must meet the highest internal quality standards in the industry. Packers must test Red Delicious apples for minimum sugar levels before they can be shipped, if the fruit was harvested before October 1. Red Delicious apples must have a minimum soluble solids level, or sugar level, of 11% before they can be marketed. The Golden Delicious apple must have a minimum of 10.5% soluble solids.
All grades and sizes of Red and Golden Delicious apples must also meet minimum firmness standards at time of shipment or be destined for processing. The Red Delicious apple should have 12 pounds of internal pressure. The Golden Delicious apple should have 10 pounds (4.53 kg) of internal pressure. Additionally, Gala and Jonagold varieties must have a minimum of 11 pounds (4.98 kg) of internal pressure. A tolerance of 10% is allowed. Washington is the only growing region in the world with this firmness requirement at time of shipment.
Packaging
The Washington State Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture enforces all of the above regulations. Random apple samples are tested for color, weight, pressure, sugar, quality and condition, before and after harvest to meet state and federal requirements.
