Carbopol,also called Carbomer or Carboxypoly-methylene is a generic name for synthetic high molecular weight polymers of acrylic acid used as thickening, dispersing, suspending and emulsifying agents in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They have the ability to absorb, retain water and swell to many times their original volume. Carbomers codes (910, 934, 940, 941 and 934P) are an indication of molecular weight and the specific components of the polymer .
Carbopol 940 polymer is a white powder, crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymer. It is an extremely efficient rheology modifier capable of providing high viscosity and forms sparkling clear gels or hydro-alcoholic gels and cream.

This cosmetic component is a white powder that mixes well with water and oils. For cosmetic use is recommended about 0.1-0.5%. The initial pH level is 3-3.3, however, with an increase in acid-base balance (over 6), the cosmetic mass is converted into a gel-like substance.
The basic principles of working with Carbomer 940 thickener:
- introduce stabilizers;
- Carbomer 940 mixed with water or oils (leave for half an hour);
- enter assets with low pH (acid);
- introduce high pH assets (if available in the recipe);
- balance the pH to a value of 6-7;
- enter neutral assets;
- at the last stage, introduce a preservative with a neutral pH (or according to the scheme above).
Action Carbomer 940, as part of cosmetics:
- excellent stabilizer;
-forms transparent gel formulations (non-sticky);
- creates a moisture-retaining / protective film;
- has a biological neutrality with respect to other components of the formulation.
