PTA is one of the important bulk organic raw materials, widely used in chemical fiber, light industry, electronics, construction and other aspects of the national economy. At the same time, the application of PTA is more concentrated. More than 90% of PTA in the world is used to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It needs 0.85-0.86 tons of PTA and 0.33-0.34 tons of MEG to produce 1 ton of pet. Polyester includes fiber chip, polyester fiber, bottle chip and film chip. In the domestic market, 75% of PTA is used in the production of polyester fiber; 20% is used in the production of bottle grade polyester, mainly used in the packaging of various drinks, especially carbonated drinks; 5% is used in film grade polyester, mainly used in packaging materials, films and tapes. It can be seen that the downstream extension product of PTA is mainly polyester fiber.

Ethylene glycol (IUPAC name: ethane-1,2-diol) is an organic compound with the formula (CH2OH)2. It is mainly used for two purposes, as a raw material in the manufacture of polyester fibers and for antifreeze formulations. It is an odorless, colorless, sweet-tasting, viscous liquid.

Ethylene glycol is a high-production-volume chemical; it breaks down in air in about 10 days and in water or soil in a few weeks.It enters the environment through the dispersal of ethylene glycol-containing products, especially at airports, where it is used in de-icing agents for runways and airplanes. While prolonged low doses of ethylene glycol show no toxicity, at near lethal doses(â?¥1000 mg/kg per day) ethylene glycol acts as a teratogen. "Based on a rather extensive database, it induces skeletal variations and malformations in rats and mice by all routes of exposure." This molecule has been observed in outer space.
