In a Francis turbine, the water flows radially into the turbine and axially out of the runner. The Francis turbine, invented by an American engineer in 1849, is the most widely deployed modern turbine. The main characteristics of the Francis turbine are - a wide range of water head, simple and reliable structure, and high efficiency.
A Francis Turbine can be supplied for a head of 15 m to 250 m. The runner diameter is available from 0.4 m to 4.5 m. Power capacity is from 75 kW to 50 MW.
New style francis turbine, compared to the old one, it has the advantages of convenient installation, high efficiency, low noise and compact structure.
The Axial turbine is for low head power plants. Water flows axially into and out of the turbine. Axial flow turbines fall into two categories, fixed blade runner and variable pitch runner, also known as a Kaplan turbine.
Fixed blade turbines are very well suited to low head power plants with limited variation in head and load.
Its main advantage is its simple design. When operated at fixed speed, maximum efficiency is achieved at the design head and water flow.
Kaplan turbines are used for medium to large power stations where there are large variations in the head, water flow and load.
Its main advantage is its ability to adapt to variable conditions with a high efficiency. The variable pitch runner is mechanically more complex than a fixed pitch runner. Axial flow turbines can be supplied for a head of 2m to 70 m. The runner diameter is available from 0.6 m to 5 m. Power capacity is from 55 kW to 50 MW.
The tubular turbine is an axial flow turbine, in a straight or S-shaped configuration.
A Tubular Turbine can be supplied for a head of 2 m to 30 m. The runner diameter is available from 0.8 m to 5.6 m. Power capacity is from 250 kW to 15 MW.
This turbine has high efficiency and lower constructon cost.
