Peppermint Mentha piperita L. belongs to the Lamiaceae mint family. It is one of four most frequently cultivated herbal plants in Poland. Herbal raw material includes peppermint leaf Menthaepiperitae folium which contains essential oil (with the main component menthol), flavonoids, bitters and tannins. Peppermint leaf products, apart from flavour values, are used in medicine as a traditional medicinal product in the symptomatic treatment of digestion disorders, such as indigestion and flatulence. Moreover, peppermint leaf presents cholagogic and anticonvulsive action, as well as antiemetic action in motion sickness or during pregnancy. Mint may be safely used in children below the age of 4.
