The wedge prism is a prism with a shallow angle between its input and output surfaces. This angle is usually 3 degrees or less. Refraction at the surfaces causes the prism to deflect light by a fixed angle. When viewing a scene through such a prism, objects will appear to be offset by an amount that varies with their distance from the prism.

Wedge prism has plane inclined surfaces. It deflects light toward its thicker portion. It can be used individually to deflect a beam to a special angle. Two wedge prisms work together can assembly an anamorphic prism to correct the elliptical shape of laser beam. The wedge prism is ideal for laser beam steering applications. The wedge prism can be used to individually deflect a laser beam by a certain angle or combined with another optical wedge prism for beam deviation purposes. A single prism can shift the incident beam by a specific angle. When two wedge prisms are used together, they can function as deformable prisms to correct the elliptical beam output of a laser tube or to deflect the beam at various angles within a 4�¸ range, where �¸ represents the deflection angle of a single prism. This beam shaping is achieved by independently rotating the two wedge prisms, making it ideal for beam scanning at different positions in imaging applications.

Features of Wedge Prism
The characteristics of wedge prisms include their very small apex angle (typically less than 1/10 radian), which results in minimal deflection of light as it passes through, regardless of the angle of incidence. In optical instruments, two wedge prisms are often combined and rotated relative to each other to produce different deflection angles or to convert the minimum deflection angle of light into the relative rotation angle of the two prisms. This setup is used to compensate for small angular deviations in the measurement of light. Such prisms find applications in many optical instruments, including military rangefinders and camera viewfinders.

Applications of Wedge Prisms

Micro rod lenses: 0.5-1.8mm diameter, 1.0-25mm length, with one end of designated curvature radius and another end of arbitrary angle.

What is more, we can provide unique rod-shaped glued lenses by combining special gluing/cementing technics and edging skill. These glued/cemented rod lenses subassembly can be made of up to four single micro rod lenses with various combination. Rod lens assembly systems are able to provide images with greater brightness, contrast and color reproduction than conventional lenses.
Rigid endoscope, for instance, which usually has a series of high-resolution optical glass rod lenses, can be forward viewing (0 degrees) or angled (10120 degrees) to allow visualization out of the axis of the telescope and increase the FOV by rotating the instrument. The optical quality of lens-generated images of rigid endoscopes still surpasses that of the fiber-optic or digital images produced by flexible scopes.
