Applications:

Paper:
Kaolin used as a coating pigment and as a filler to replace fiber. It possesses desirable optical properties.

Concrete:
Kaolin helps to improve strength and durability of concrete. When added to concrete mix, reacts with free lime released during cement hydration to produce additional cementitious material, resulting in an improved high performance concrete.

Plastics :
Kaolin is widely used as filler in the plastics industry because of its inert chemical nature and its unique size, shape and structure.

Agriculture :
It is used as a carrier and diluent in fertilizers, pesticides and related products. It is suitable as carrier because it aides the retention of the formulations on the plant.

Rubber :
It is commonly used as functional filler in rubber applications. While Kaolin improves overall performance for Rubber in general, different types of white pigment play specific roles in rubber application.

Paint :
Kaolin used as an extender in paints. It reduces the amount of expensive pigment such as Titanium Dioxide. It assists with desirable rheological properties that help maintain proper dispersion and provide bulk to the product.

Ceramic :
Kaolin improves whiteness and brightness of ceramic body. Good plasticity, good shrinkage, low water absorption and casting rate are also very important properties of kaolin.

Kaolin also called as China Clay is nearly white in colour. It is distinguished from other industrial clays based on its fine particle size and pure colourings. Its ability to disperse in water makes it an ideal pigment.

The primary constituent in kaolin is the mineral kaolinite, a hydrous aluminum silicate formed by the decomposition of minerals such as feldspar. Hydrous kaolin is characterized by its fine particle size, plate like or lamellar particle shape and chemical inertness.

Kaolinite is the mineral that is derived from the rock called â??Kaolinâ?? and from there, it gets its name. It is also commonly known as â??China Clayâ??. Kaolin is mined from the regions of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala, West Bengal and Jharkhand in India

The physical properties of Kaolin include high brightness, non-abrasiveness, poor conductivity of heat and electricity and it has naturally fine particles. Kaolin remains white after calcination due to its refractory properties and can be easily dispersed in water. There are several variations within Kaolin such as Hydrous Kaolin, Metakaolin and Calcined Kaolin.

Hydrous Kaolin has fine particles with plate-like shapes and inertness in terms of chemical reactivity, whereas, Metakaolin is created by the process of calcination of Kaolin. It is a white mineral additive which is most popularly used in cement-based products. In contrast to this, Calcined Kaolin is manufactured by heating the finest natural kaolin to high temperatures in a kiln. This calcination process changes the size and shape of the particles, enhances the whiteness and hardness of the mineral and improves its electrical conductivity.
