Chemical reaction:



In a zinc¡¡ìCmanganese dioxide dry battery, the zinc can is the negative terminal through which the electric current flows into the device. The zinc is oxidised according to the following half-equation.



Zn(s) ¡¡§² Zn2+(aq) + 2 e− [E¡ã = -0.7626 volts]
The positive terminal is a mixture of chemicals ¡¡ìC usually a mixture of manganese dioxide powder, carbon and an electrolyte to increase the electrical conductivity. A carbon electrode rod also is placed inside the middle of the battery, connecting the two metal-capped ends of opposite charge and serving as the positive terminal.The reaction is as follows:

and the Cl− combines with the Zn2+.
