Exports of onion have fetched for the country valuable foreign exchange and have earned for the producers a high price per ton. Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Gujarat, AP,UP, Orissa & MP are the major onion producing states in India. Maharashtra alone contributes to 30% of the country's annual production.

Export of Onion from India brings in around Rs 182,752.21 crore per annum. India has a large onion cultivation area accounting for around 22.4% of the world onion cultivation area.
