Musk xylene is a synthetic musk fragrance that mimics natural musk. It has been used as a perfume fixative in a wide variety of consumer products and is still used in some cosmetics and fragrances.

Musk ingredients are substances with a typical musky scent, used by the fragrance industry in a wide range of consumer products including; cosmetics, detergents, soaps, fabric softeners, and cleaning products. Synthetic musks are generally divided into three groups of substances with similar properties but different chemical structures: nitro musks, polycyclic musks, and macrocyclic musks. The main nitro musks are musk xylene and musk ketone.

Musk xylene is primarily used in detergents and soaps.
Musk xylene is still permitted for use in cosmetics products (except oral care products) in the European Union under the Cosmetics Directive.
The permitted quantities are:
up to 1% in fine fragrances;
up to 0.4% in eau de toilette;
up to 0.03% in other products.
European Union suppliers must inform their customers on request if a product contains more than 0.1% by weight of musk xylene.
