Fluoroplastic is a synthetic polymer that contains fluorine and is white. It is used in many industries due to its unique properties. Fluoroplastic is also called Teflon, polytetrafluoroethylene, fluoroplastic-4, PTFE, fluoropolymer.
The first to discover Teflon was the American scientist Roy Plunkett in 1938 - he observed the polymerization of gaseous tetrafluoroethylene, its transformation into a solid substance (resembling paraffin). This material has distinctive properties and was immediately sent for patenting.
In the USSR, Teflon appeared during the Second World War in the production of tanks that were sent from America under Lend-Lease. Soviet designers were impressed by the design of the tank turret - its rotation was carried out not with the help of grease, but with a fluoroplastic gasket .
